“Kauai is just so beautiful.” That’s what I say when asked why I love this glorious island. And beauty brings with it a sense of calm and peacefulness. So here are glimpses of what I mean by beauty. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I celebrate that thought. And Keats’s immortal words say it best: "Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."
Gorgeous white orchid. Some orchids bloom for just one day. If this one did, for me it will live forever.
A fabulous grilled fish sandwich for lunch. I love the symmetry in the presentation. The fries were especially crisp and the fish fresh as could be.
A brown anole lizard soaking up the sun’s rays. These critters are all over the island. We spotted this one on our path around the lagoon. In an instant it skedaddled into its rocky home.
Stunning bougainvillea bush. I stopped in my tracks while on our walk to the Kukui’ula farmers’ market. Native to eastern South America, they thrive in the Hawaiian Islands.
An entire bush of hibiscus blooms. They seem to be smiling and talking to me. Did you know that the flowers live for just one day?
The white-rumped shama. It’s hard to get a good shot of these birds to show their true beauty. I happened by as this one decided to inspect something on the concrete outside our apartment building. Known for their beautiful songs, the shama, native to India, has been introduced to other parts of the world.
My first batch of sourdough bagels in Kauai! Boy, are they delish. Crusty and chewy like bagels should be. Dorothy and I love them split, toasted, and buttered. And for lunch, they’re great with lox and cream cheese.
